Reporting Absence

Parents and Carers are required to notify the Attendance Officer as early as possible on the first day of a child’s absence, and by no later than 10.00 am. If a child is absent for more than one day, Parents and Carers should continue to update the school daily of the reason why.

You are able to leave a message on the Absence Line, tel: 01579 386014, through School Gateway or you can email attendance@callingtoncc.net. Failure to do this could result in the absence being unauthorised.

The Attendance Officer will contact you if your child is not in College and no contact has been made by you to notify us of their absence. The welfare of your child is our utmost concern. Please make sure that you notify us of any changes to your contact details.

Children missing education is a safeguarding concern and will be dealt with accordingly by College staff.

Unauthorised absence:

If your child is absent from school without authorisation, you will be committing an offence under the Education Act 1996.

We may submit a request to Cornwall Council for a Penalty Notice to be issued, in accordance with Sections 444A and 444B of the said Act. Penalty Notices are issued per liable parent, per child and each carry a fine of £60 if paid within 21 days or £120 if paid after this but within 28 days. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice may result in legal action.

Absence not authorised by the school may result in a prosecution in the Magistrates’ Court under Section 444(1) or Section 444(1A) of the Education Act 1996, leading to a fine of up to £2,500 and/or a custodial sentence. Cornwall Council may also apply for the costs incurred in taking the matter to Court.
